Laura Fredes, MD
Dr. Fredes is a board-certified psychiatrist who grew up in Peru and earned her medical degree at Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima. She completed her psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Elmhurst Hospital in New York City.
In 2024 she founded MindMED in Southlake. She sees every patient herself, takes the time to listen, and builds the treatment plan with you.

What conditions do you treat?
Dr. Fredes treats adults ages 16 to 65, men and women, for a wide range of psychiatric conditions including anxiety disorders, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, PTSD and trauma, insomnia and sleep disorders, mood and anxiety changes during pregnancy, after birth, and in perimenopause, ADHD, and medication management for complex cases. She takes an integrative approach: medication decisions are made alongside sleep, labs, and lifestyle.
Is Dr. Fredes a psychiatrist or a therapist?
Dr. Fredes is a board-certified psychiatrist with an MD (medical degree), not a therapist. Her work is psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, and psychopharmacology. MindMED does not offer psychotherapy or counseling. If therapy would help alongside medication, Dr. Fredes coordinates with your therapist or can recommend one in the Southlake and DFW area.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. MindMED Behavioral Health is in-network with Aetna, BCBS TX (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas), Oscar Health, and UnitedHealthcare/Optum. Self-pay is $400 for the first evaluation and $200 for follow-ups, and we accept major credit cards. See the Pricing and Insurance page for details.
How long is the first appointment?
Initial psychiatric evaluations typically last 60 minutes. This allows Dr. Fredes adequate time to conduct a thorough assessment, understand your complete medical and psychiatric history, discuss treatment options, and begin building a strong therapeutic relationship. Follow-up visits are typically 30 minutes.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Dr. Fredes offers both in-person and telehealth appointments. Telehealth is available for patients located in Texas, New York, and Virginia, including first visits. Dr. Fredes may recommend an in-person visit when it is clinically appropriate, and ADHD evaluations are done in person.
Do you prescribe controlled substances?
Only when her own evaluation supports it. Dr. Fredes prescribes the full range of psychiatric medications, but she does not prescribe controlled substances at a first visit and does not continue another prescriber's controlled-substance prescription without a complete evaluation.
Can I see Dr. Fredes in Spanish?
Yes. Dr. Fredes is fully bilingual in English and Spanish. She provides complete psychiatric care in both languages, eliminating the need for an interpreter and ensuring clear, direct communication with patients and their families.
