Secure video appointments for patients located in Texas, New York, and Virginia
Psychiatry Without Geographic Barriers
Life doesn't always make it easy to visit an office. Work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, transportation challenges, chronic health conditions, or geographic distance can make in-person appointments difficult or impossible. That's where telehealth comes in. MindMED offers psychiatric appointments by secure video for patients located in Texas, New York, and Virginia.
A telehealth visit with Dr. Fredes includes evaluation, medication management, and attention to lifestyle and medical factors in your treatment plan, delivered over a secure video platform. Dr. Fredes may recommend an in-person visit when clinically appropriate, and ADHD evaluations are conducted in person at the Southlake office.
Dr. Fredes is licensed to practice psychiatry in Texas, New York, and Virginia, and accepts patients from all three states via telehealth. Whether you're in Dallas-Fort Worth, living out of state for work, managing a chronic condition that makes travel difficult, or simply prefer the convenience and privacy of virtual appointments, telehealth may be an option for you.
Which States Are We Serving?
Dr. Laura Fredes holds medical licenses in three states and provides telehealth services to patients located in any of these states:
Texas: Primary location: Southlake, DFW metroplex. Telehealth available statewide.
New York: Licensed and providing telehealth services to patients throughout the state.
Virginia: Licensed and providing telehealth services to patients throughout the state.
If you're located outside these three states, we're unable to provide services at this time. Telemedicine is governed by state medical licensing laws, which means psychiatrists can only treat patients in states where they're licensed.
Telehealth Is Right For You If...
Telehealth suits many patients, and it is not the right choice for everyone. Telehealth may be a good fit if:
You have a stable condition being managed on consistent medication. Routine follow-up appointments for psychiatric medication management are often done by telehealth. Once Dr. Fredes has done an initial evaluation and your treatment is stable, virtual visits are an option for ongoing care.
You're managing your symptoms effectively and need medication adjustments or monitoring. If you're on a psychiatric medication regimen that's helping, regular check-ins via telehealth can be done without the time commitment of office visits.
You have transportation or scheduling barriers to in-person appointments. Work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, chronic pain or illness, disability, or distance from our office makes telehealth the practical choice.
You're a busy professional or parent who values convenience and privacy. Joining a video appointment from home or your office saves time and allows for appointments that fit your schedule.
You prefer the comfort and privacy of your own space. Many patients feel more comfortable discussing mental health from their own environment.
You're managing anxiety, depression, or another psychiatric condition on a stable medication regimen. Telehealth is available for routine psychiatric follow-up for the conditions we treat, when Dr. Fredes considers it appropriate.
How a Telehealth Appointment Works
A telehealth appointment at MindMED follows this flow:
Schedule your appointment. Visit https://mindmedbh.com/appointments/ to book your telehealth visit. You'll select "telehealth" as your visit type and choose a time that works for you.
Receive appointment confirmation and instructions. You'll get an email with appointment details, a link to the secure video platform (SimplePractice), and instructions on how to join.
Test your technology before your appointment. Make sure you have a quiet, private space, a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and a stable internet connection. Test your camera and audio a few minutes before your appointment time.
Join the video session at your appointment time. Click the link or open the SimplePractice app and join the secure video room. Dr. Fredes will be there at the scheduled time.
Meet with Dr. Fredes. You'll discuss your symptoms, any medication changes, how you're managing, and any concerns.
Follow up with next steps. Dr. Fredes may send you prescriptions electronically to your pharmacy, schedule follow-up appointments, or order labs if clinically indicated. You'll get a summary note in your patient portal.
HIPAA Compliance & Privacy
Your privacy is non-negotiable. MindMED uses SimplePractice's secure telehealth platform, which is fully compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Here's what that means for you:
Encrypted video connection. Your video session is encrypted.
Secure patient portal. All medical records and appointments are stored in a secure, encrypted portal that you access with a password.
No recording without consent. Appointments are never recorded without explicit permission.
Professional-grade security. SimplePractice is a HIPAA-compliant platform built for healthcare practices.
For maximum privacy during your telehealth appointment, choose a quiet, private space where others won't overhear. Close doors, step away from shared spaces, and let household members know you need uninterrupted time.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is an in-person visit recommended instead of telehealth?
Telehealth is widely used for psychiatric evaluation and medication management, and many follow-up visits can be done by video. It is not the right fit for every situation. Dr. Fredes may recommend an in-person visit when clinically appropriate, for example for some initial evaluations or complex clinical situations, and ADHD evaluations are conducted in person. We can discuss what makes sense for you when you book.
What if I need to be seen in person for an initial evaluation?
Some patients prefer or benefit from in-person initial evaluations. If that's important to you, we can accommodate that. Dr. Fredes also has an office in Southlake, Texas for in-person visits. We can discuss what makes sense for your situation when you book your appointment.
What internet speed do I need for telehealth?
A stable internet connection of at least 2.5 Mbps is recommended for clear video. Most modern home internet connections and cellular data will work fine. Test your connection by joining a video call a few minutes before your appointment to make sure audio and video are clear.
Can someone else join my telehealth appointment with me?
Sometimes it's helpful to have a family member or caregiver present, especially for initial evaluations or during significant medication changes. However, for privacy and clinical reasons, most appointments are between you and Dr. Fredes. If you'd like to have someone join, let us know when you book and we can discuss whether that makes sense for your situation.
How do prescriptions work with telehealth?
After your telehealth appointment, Dr. Fredes can send prescriptions electronically directly to your pharmacy. You'll be able to pick them up as usual. If you need new prescriptions, Dr. Fredes will send them during or shortly after your visit.
What if I have technical problems during my appointment?
If your connection drops or you have technical issues, try refreshing the page or rejoining the video link. We recommend testing your technology 10 minutes before your appointment to catch issues early. If you're having ongoing problems, you can call the office at (817) 203-4179 and we can troubleshoot or reschedule if needed.
Can I use telehealth if I'm not in my home state?
You can use telehealth if you're in Texas, New York, or Virginia (the states where Dr. Fredes is licensed). If you're traveling to another state, your appointment can continue via telehealth as long as you're in one of these three states. We can't provide care to patients in states where Dr. Fredes isn't licensed.
Will my insurance cover telehealth?
In most cases, yes. Insurance generally covers telehealth the same way it covers in-person visits. We are in-network with Aetna, BCBSTX, Oscar Health, and United Healthcare. If you have questions about your specific coverage, we can verify your benefits before your appointment.
