Psychiatry Without Geographic Barriers
Life doesn’t always make it easy to visit an office. Work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, transportation challenges, chronic health conditions, or geographic distance can make in-person appointments difficult or impossible. That’s where telehealth comes in. MindMED offers high-quality psychiatric care delivered securely through video appointments, bringing expert care directly to your home or office.
Telehealth with Dr. Fredes is not a compromise on quality. It’s the same comprehensive, evidence-based psychiatric care you’d receive in person-same thorough evaluation, same careful medication management, same integration of lifestyle and medical factors into your treatment plan. The only difference is the medium: you see Dr. Fredes on a secure video platform rather than in the office.
Dr. Fredes is licensed to practice psychiatry in Texas, New York, and Virginia, and accepts patients from all three states via telehealth. Whether you’re in Dallas-Fort Worth, living out of state for work, managing a chronic condition that makes travel difficult, or simply prefer the convenience and privacy of virtual appointments, telehealth is an effective and accessible option.
Which States Are We Serving?
Dr. Laura Fredes holds medical licenses in three states and provides telehealth services to patients located in any of these states:
- Texas – Primary location: Southlake, DFW metroplex. Telehealth available statewide.
- New York – Licensed and providing telehealth services to patients throughout the state.
- Virginia – Licensed and providing telehealth services to patients throughout the state.
If you’re located outside these three states, we’re unable to provide services at this time. Telemedicine is governed by state medical licensing laws, which means psychiatrists can only treat patients in states where they’re licensed.
Important note about controlled substances: Controlled medications (such as stimulants for ADHD) can be prescribed via telehealth for patients located in Texas. For patients in New York and Virginia, controlled substances are not available via telehealth. Non-controlled psychiatric medications can be prescribed in all three states.
Telehealth Is Right For You If…
While telehealth works beautifully for many patients, it’s not the right choice for everyone. Telehealth is an excellent option if:
- You have a stable condition being managed on consistent medication. Routine follow-up appointments for psychiatric medication management are ideal via telehealth. Once Dr. Fredes has done an initial comprehensive evaluation and your treatment is stable, virtual visits work well for ongoing care.
- You’re managing your symptoms effectively and need medication adjustments or monitoring. If you’re on a psychiatric medication regimen that’s helping, regular check-ins via telehealth keep you on track without the time commitment of office visits.
- You have transportation or scheduling barriers to in-person appointments. Work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, chronic pain or illness, disability, or distance from our office makes telehealth the practical choice.
- You’re a busy professional or parent who values convenience and privacy. Joining a video appointment from home or your office saves time and allows for appointments that fit your schedule.
- You prefer the comfort and privacy of your own space. Many patients feel more comfortable discussing mental health from their own environment.
- You’re managing anxiety, depression, ADHD, or other psychiatric conditions on a stable medication regimen. Telehealth works well for routine psychiatric follow-up across the full spectrum of conditions we treat.
Note: Initial psychiatric evaluations can sometimes be conducted via telehealth, though Dr. Fredes may recommend an in-person first visit for certain clinical situations. New intakes require a comprehensive evaluation, and some patients benefit from in-person assessment. We’ll discuss what makes sense for your situation when you schedule.
How a Telehealth Appointment Works
A telehealth appointment at MindMED follows this flow:
- Schedule your appointment. Visit https://mindmedbh.com/appointments/ to book your telehealth visit. You’ll select “telehealth” as your visit type and choose a time that works for you.
- Receive appointment confirmation and instructions. You’ll get an email with appointment details, a link to the secure video platform (SimplePractice), and instructions on how to join.
- Test your technology before your appointment. Make sure you have a quiet, private space, a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and a stable internet connection. Test your camera and audio a few minutes before your appointment time.
- Join the video session at your appointment time. Click the link or open the SimplePractice app and join the secure video room. Dr. Fredes will be there at the scheduled time.
- Meet with Dr. Fredes just like you would in the office. You’ll discuss your symptoms, any medication changes, how you’re managing, and any concerns. The appointment quality and depth is identical to in-person visits.
- Follow up with next steps. Dr. Fredes may send you prescriptions electronically to your pharmacy, schedule follow-up appointments, or order labs if clinically indicated. You’ll get a summary note in your patient portal.
HIPAA Compliance & Privacy
Your privacy is non-negotiable. MindMED uses SimplePractice’s secure telehealth platform, which is fully compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Here’s what that means for you:
- Encrypted video connection. Your video session is encrypted end-to-end, so no one can intercept or view your appointment.
- Secure patient portal. All medical records and appointments are stored in a secure, encrypted portal that you access with a password.
- No recording without consent. Appointments are never recorded without explicit permission.
- Professional-grade security. SimplePractice meets and exceeds HIPAA security standards for health data protection.
For maximum privacy during your telehealth appointment, choose a quiet, private space where others won’t overhear. Close doors, step away from shared spaces, and let household members know you need uninterrupted time.
